Our History

Our History

The Howze Mortuary, Inc., Inc. is a family owned and operated funeral home located in the Northern part of Greenville County. The mortuary is owned by Raymond “Bo” and Brynda Brown and they have been helping families in the area for the past 30 years.

The mortuary traces its roots back to 1948 when Harold Stillwell opened The Stillwell Mortuary in a two story home on North Poinsett Highway in Travelers Rest. Around 1950 Mr. Stillwell built a new modern facility just down the street and continued to serve the community until 1958.

Then in 1958 the mortuary was sold to James M. O’Dell and he continued operating at this location until 1963. In 1963 Mr. O’Dell decided it was time to grow so he bought a home at the corner of State Park Road and Poinsett Highway and remodeled it to become the new O’Dell Mortuary.

In August of 1972 Townes and Kathleen Howze purchased the mortuary from Mr. O’Dell. In 1973, the name was changed to The Howze Mortuary, Inc.. On June 20, 1996 ground was broken for our current state of the art funeral home. On April 27th, 1997 a dream of the Howze’s to give the Travelers Rest area a new funeral home was realized. Our mortuary has a 200 plus seat chapel, 4 spacious viewing/visitation rooms and ample parking. We at The Howze Mortuary, Inc. believe that personal service is the backbone of our business and for the last 52 years we have offered service that is second to none. In 2009 Raymond & Brynda Brown purchased the mortuary from the Howze family and will continue to give the Travelers Rest area the compassionate family oriented service that has been the main focus of our 76 year heritage.

Mission And Vision

In 1972 when The Howze’s purchased the O’Dell Mortuary they set out to provide the best service of any funeral home in the area. As a result of this vision the mortuary has become an intricate part of the Northern Greenville landscape for the past 52 years. The reason for the mortuary’s continued success is the care and personal service we give each family we serve. The staff of The Howze Mortuary, Inc. believes that funeral service is a calling and because of this we have strived through the years to treat each family with dignity and respect. As a result of this never ending compassion that has been shown to so many families in the area, our mortuary is regarded as one of the best in the upstate. At The Howze Mortuary, Inc. our motto is “Growing through Personal Service”.

Carolina. Kenny is married to the love of his life, Sherri. They have 4 sons and 5 grandchildren with 3 of their sons all residing here in Greenville County. Kenny is actively involved in his church and in the school that his grandson attends. He has been an ordained minister since 1997. He enjoys playing the piano, organ, and bass guitar. His hobbies include golfing, hiking, and backcountry camping. He has a warm personality and truly cares for people, and it shows in the families that he has served through the years. He became seriously interested in the funeral profession at the age of 15 in Hogansville, GA. The Claude A. McKibben & Sons funeral home had served their family for generations. At age 16, he went and spoke with Mr. Claude Sr. and expressed his interest in coming to work for them. They did not have any openings at the time, but about 3 years later Claude Jr. and John McKibben offered him a job and he anxiously accepted. He learned a lot about the funeral profession from these two gentlemen and is forever grateful to them for giving him his first opportunity. About a year later he got married and moved away and left the profession, but it never left him. Deep down inside he knew that one day he would be working in funeral service. In 1994 he went to work for Martin & Hightower Funeral Home in Carrollton, Ga and worked there for three years before accepting a Pastoral position in South Georgia. In 2015 he found himself back in the Carrollton area and in June 2017 answered a call from Mr. Bryant Hightower offering him a place with Hightower Family Funeral Homes. Once again, he gladly accepted. He was honored to get to work alongside Mr. Hightower and glean from the years of experience that a 3rd generation Funeral Director/Embalmer had to offer. He is often asked, “Why did you choose this profession?” His answer is, “I feel that it is more of a calling and a ministry.” He’s always had a desire to help people in times of need and show compassion no matter what they are going through. The funeral profession affords this privilege. To earn the trust of the families we serve and walk with them through their journey of grief is truly fulfilling. Kenny is looking forward to getting to know the people in Travelers Rest and having a positive impact in the community that is Christ honoring. Finally, after years of their family being separated by many miles, the Lord has graciously brought them all back together to live close and be in the same church, Bethany Baptist Church of Travelers Rest.
