Jack R Wainwright

Jack "Gutch" Wainwright, age 85, passed away peacefully at McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville, SC surrounded by his devoted wife Helen "Toni" Wainwright and three children Joy, Ron and Jill on April 20th, 2021. Born in Johnstown, PA he was the son of the late Thomas and Myrtle Wainwright. He graduated from Conemaugh High School where he played football and enjoyed spending time with his girlfriend "Toni", their families and friends. He went on to work at Bethlehem Steel Co. (PA); and then relocated to CT to work for Cytex Industries (formerly American Cyanamid) and retired after 36 years. Gutch began his retirement in VT where he loved family gatherings, the beautiful mountains and long walks with his wife. He then moved back "home" to Johnstown, PA to be closer to friends and family. He spent 15 years enjoying Friday night card games, horseshoes and summertime family wiffleball games. He couldn't resist the competitiveness of a good game of SCAT with family and friends. He cherished taunting whomever might be sitting next to him and giving everyone at the table a good laugh. He attended Conemaugh First United Methodist Church and was a member of the Greater Johnstown Masonic Lodge. After many long winters he moved to Greenville, SC to enjoy the warmer weather and amazing sunsets. Most dear to Gutch's heart was sharing a cup of morning coffee or an evening cocktail with his wife Toni. He adored his wife's cooking, especially his favorite, peach kuchen. He spent hours sitting on the patio watching the butterflies, birds and the golfers playing the 17th hole on the course in the distance. He loved staring at the beautiful mountains while listening to music and reminiscing with Toni about their life together. As time passed, he enjoyed the simplest things in life like watching an old movie, a UCONN basketball game, college football or an episode "or a few" of Chicago PD. Furthermore, let's not forget a good ole' Chick-fil-A sandwich on a Friday evening was a must in Gutch's book of life. Along with his parents he is predeceased by his 3 sisters and 2 brothers. He is survived by his loving wife Toni and their three children Joy Cheney and husband Wayne; Ron Wainwright and wife Kate; and Jill Collins and husband Paul; ten grandchildren Jillian, Jamie, Erin, Jake, Zach, Ben, Jacqueline, Thomas, Reese and Kate; six great-grandchildren; Kennedy, Reagan, Reise, Jackson, Noah and Avery. A private family service is planned. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to McCall Hospice House 1836 W.
