Robert Pierce Doyle

Robert Pierce Doyle, born in Chicago, Ill. on January 14, 1925 passed away October 13, 2010 in Greenville, S. C. He was the son of Harry Conan Doyle and Loucartha Pierce Doyle. He is survived by his wife, Libby Sloan Doyle, sons Brett Harrison Doyle and Douglas Pierce Doyle, three grandchildren, Alexis Ann Doyle, Connor Robert William Doyle and Ryan Pierce Doyle, one sister, Doris Doyle Earhart, one nephew, Stephen Earhart, three nieces, Jody Earhart Lindquist, Nancy Earhart Cornell and Susan Earhart Martzahl, 13 grand-nephews and nieces and 1 great-grandniece. Bob served in the Navy during World War II as an Advanced Sonar Petty Officer. He graduated from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and was a Phi Delta Theta. His best friend and frat brother was Jeffrey Hunter (Hank McKinney). Bob had a part in one of his movies, The Three Young Texans. Marv Levy, retired Manager of the Buffalo Bills mentions Bob in his autobiography. Bob was Captain of his high school football team and Marv was a team member. His business specialty was packaging and he was a member of the Society of Plastic Engineers. He holds U. S. Patent 3420366. Bob was Director of Marketing for Milliken in Spartanburg, S.C. In 1967, he started his own plastic packaging manufacturing and design company, Durosystems, Inc., in Burbank, California. Many of his designs are common in stores today including the “clam pack”, a tabbed, hanging plastic box. Bob was appointed by the United States Secretary of Commerce to the National Defense Executive Reserve and served as a member of the President’s Council on Management. He was a Rotary club member, an avid golfer, loved theatre and movies and conversations about politics where he loved playing the “devil’s advocate”. He was rarely seen without reading material in hand on business, politics, language and science. His avocations were day trading, history and current events. He loved car trips, blue highways and often stretched a USA cross country trip into a month of adventures. Interested and curious about everything, he was less concerned about getting where he was going than stopping to enjoy the journey. Services will be held Monday, October 18, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Christ Church Episcopal. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A reception in his honor will be held for family and friends in the Arrington Room at the church. Please make donations to the Furman Undergraduate Evening Studies program in lieu of flowers.
