Brenda Mattox Tate

Brenda Mattox Tate (June 25, 1943-April 6, 2024) Brenda Mattox Tate, 80, loving wife of Charles Wendell Tate for 57 years, mother, grandmother and friend, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on April 6, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones. Born and raised in the peach orchards of Greer, South Carolina, she was a graduate of Byrnes High School and North Greenville Junior College. She retired from the Greer Commission of Public Works after serving for 38 years. She was the daughter of the late Nan Chiles Mattox and Manly Murray Mattox and was also predeceased by a sister, Martha Mattox McHugh. After meeting Charles on a blind date and marrying in 1966, she made Travelers Rest her permanent home, where she was involved in various church and school events, always supporting her children and grandchildren in their various activities. Brenda was a committed member of community organizations and clubs including the Travelers Rest Woman’s Club, the Travelers Rest Music Club and the Travelers Rest Historical Society. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Travelers Rest where she used her many gifts to serve faithfully as pianist, choir member, and director of the WMU. She had a heart for missions and served on countless other committees and ministries. Surviving in addition to her husband are her daughters Jennifer Tate Burgess (JJ), Susan Tate DeMars (Rion), all of Travelers Rest, her four grandchildren, Lydia and Joel Burgess, and Rebekah and Hannah DeMars, and a niece, Nancy McHugh Morris. Our family would like to especially thank Dr. Peter Maurides and IMA of Greenville for their excellent care and attention for many years, and the loving and attentive staff of Pruitt Hospice and Spring Park Memory Care in Travelers Rest, where she resided for 12 short days. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at The Howze Mortuary. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Travelers Rest. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Travelers Rest, 20 McElhaney Road, Travelers Rest, South Carolina, 29690.
