Elbert Dee Rush

Elbert Dee Rush, 81, fondly known as “Tex” by many, of Slater, South Carolina, went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 5, 2025. He was born on February 13th, 1944, in Eastland, Texas. Elbert met the love of his life, Mary Ann Hart Rush, at First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Lubbock, TX in June of 1962. They married shortly after August 25th, 1962, and were blessed with twin daughters, Mary Ann and Rita Jan, and a son, Paul Dee (Danette). They shared a devoted marriage over 61 years. Elbert proudly served his country, joining the New Mexico National Guard in 1959. He transferred to the Texas National Guard in 1962 and served until his honorable discharge as a Staff Sargeant in 1970. He worked as a welder for over 35 years at South Carolina Steel. A dedicated member of the Slater community, Elbert volunteered as a firefighter for more than 18 years, mentoring future fire chiefs and commissioners. He was also a faithful member of Slater Church of God for over 50 years. Elbert was a true Texan at heart. He loved fishing, reading a good Louis L’ Amour book, solving a word search, watching a Rodeo or western movie, and spending time with his beloved grand-dog, Bandit. The eldest of his siblings, Elbert is survived by his brothers: James Travis (Kay), Stanley (Linda), Gary (Romell), Ray Don (Darlene), and David Wayne (Bon Jean), along with many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Ann Hart Rush; twin daughters: Mary Ann and Rita Jan, Teresa Carpenter Goad; brothers: George Carpenter and Floyd Rush (Sharon); and his twin brother: Delbert Lee Rush. He is also preceded in death by his mother, Ruby Elizabeth Green Carpenter; stepfather Delbert Stanley Capenter; and father, James Thomas Rush. What a beautiful reunion it must be. Special thanks to Gabriel and Kaley Coates for their care and support during his final months. Visitation will be held on Thursday morning, July 10th, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at The Howze Mortuary. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in The Howze Mortuary Chapel.
