Martha Jane Jewell Sprouse

Martha Jane Jewell Sprouse, 85, passed away Friday, August 18, 2023. She was a Greenville native and the daughter of the late William and Pauline Scott Jewell. Martha excelled in all she did both in business and her personal life. She worked continuously from the time she was in high school with jobs at Roses Five and Ten and Kash and Karry. Then she worked for Franklin Finance, was assistant to Furman’s president, Dr. John Plyler, a decorator and sales training manager with The House of Decorative Accessories, she and her husband were owners of Sprouse Accounting and, afterwards, she did tax returns from her home for friends until she was 83. She was a proud Purple Tornado and graduate of Parker High School, and was active with the reunions throughout the years. Martha was known for her impeccable taste for home décor and always being dressed “to the nines” complete with matching accessories, blingy shoes, manicure and pedicure! She was a kind, classy, tender, funny person who was a great friend to many and who had many great friends. As in all aspects of her life, when the time came that she needed assistance with her daily life, she left her home with dignity and her head held high thinking only of the decisions makers, her children, and how to make the transition easy for them (although she was a little ticked that she couldn’t drive). Martha was a Furman and Clemson fan and always enjoyed and loved shopping, especially Amazon! She was a devoted member of Bethel Baptist Church where she was a soloist and choir member. The family would like to give special thanks to the residents and employees of Oakview Park Senior Living for making Oakview a home she loved. Also, special thanks and much love to all of Martha’s devoted friends, especially Judy Hickum who was always there for Martha in her most recent years and brought so much fun to her life. Survivors include her two children, Jennifer Thompson (Bruce Derrick) and Scott Sprouse (Anita); the best grand-dog ever, Barrott; two siblings, Bill “Bubba” Jewell and Dianne Jewell Batson (David); grandchildren, KC Thompson (Chelsea), McKenzie Sprouse (Callie), and Justin Sprouse; great-grandchildren, Anslee, Bryson and Carson Thompson; nieces, Ginger Ducote (Mitchell) and Dionne Ducote (Michael); nephew, Chip Batson (Jackie); grandnieces, Macie Batson and Chrystal Roberts (Brandon) and grandnephew Michael Ducote. In addition to her parents, Martha was predeceased by her husband and high school sweetheart, Robert Kenneth Sprouse, who sang “There she is, Miss America” every time she walked in the door. She was also predeceased by a niece, Tina Jewell Ducote, nephew, Billy Batson, grandnephew, Miles Batson and sister-in-law, Shirley Jewell. The family will have a Celebration of Life Service at Bethel Baptist Church on Saturday, August 26 with visitation at 10:00 and the service at 11:00. The family is at their respective homes.
