September 26, 1944 - January 22, 2021
Doris Jarrard Stepp went home to be with her heavenly Father on January 22, 2021. Doris was a very gregarious person with many beloved friends and family. If you were her friend you became family. She was generous in spirit and time never failing to listen and offering to help in any way she could. Doris was a teacher having taught in South Carolina at Slater-Marietta Elementary from 1966 till 1975 when she married and moved to North Carolina and taught at her beloved Dana Elementary from 1975 till her retirement in 1993. Doris completed her undergraduate degree at Newberry College and earned her Master’s degree at Furman University. Outside of teaching she lived a very active life participating in ceramics and crafts. She belonged to both the WNC Ceramics and WNC Crafters Association for many years. During her time in both associations, she won many awards for her ceramic pieces and participated in many local and out of town craft shows. She was also an avid camper traveling during her summers off. She helped charter and presided as president of the Apple Valley Camper Association for several years as well as traveling & holding titles with other local camping clubs as well. Doris was of the Baptist faith and an accomplished organist and pianist having played for several local churches. Doris is preceded in death by her father, Melvin Lee Jarrard; her mother, Clara Fox Jarrard; and her brother Paul D. Jarrard. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Betty and James Simmons, and her sister-in-law Peggy Jarrard. Her nieces Lonita Stegall and her husband Roger, Rene Batson and her husband Dan, Diane Phillips and her husband James; her nephews Roger Simmons, Michael Simmons and his wife Michelle; as well as several grand nieces and nephews, and her best friend Russell Jackson. Her spirit, laughter, and spunk will be missed by all those she loved and who were touched by her in their lifetime. We take comfort that she is at peace and home with her savior shining her special light from above.
