Frances Holtzclaw Lockaby

Frances Holtzclaw Lockaby, 96, Travelers Rest, SC passed on January 27, 2026 at The Woodlands at Furman. She was the daughter of Carrie Goodlett and Reid Holtzclaw. Aunt Boo, as she was affectionately known to family and friends, loved and accepted everyone as Jesus teaches us to do. She was married to Lewis Lockaby for 64 years prior to his death in 2015. Together, they traveled the world visiting every state and every continent. Frances was valedictorian of her graduating class at Travelers Rest High School. She obtained a BS in Chemistry from Winthrop College. In the aftermath of Sputnik, she received a National Science Foundation grant to pursue a Master’s Degree from Clemson University in Mathematics. She taught Chemistry and advanced mathematics at Mountain View High School, Travelers Rest High School, and Blue Ridge High School. In a time when mothers were expected to be homemakers, Frances was a trailblazer. She worked full time while raising 3 daughters, Ruth Anderson, Carrie Burgess, and Fara Stewart. She was equally proud of her sons-in law, Robert Anderson, Ned Burgess, and Aubrey Stewart. Frances was loved by her grandchildren; Tyler Anderson, Joshua Burgess, Ashley Toney(Drew), Jonathan Burgess(Diana), Katie Reckart (Tyler) and Caroline Stewart. She was also loved by a number of great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and one great, great grandchild. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by a grandson, Eric Anderson, and three loving sisters, Pauline Cornell, Naida Lyle, and Lee Holtzclaw. Frances was a devoted member of Travelers Rest United Methodist Church where she served as organist, pianist, Lay Leader, Sunday School teacher and she served on numerous committees. She was a strong supporter of the United Methodist Women and especially, the Suzanna Wesley Circle. In 1993, she was the primary author of a history of Travelers Rest UMC. Her faith was central to her life. Frances was dedicated to her church, and she never wavered in her love for others. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday morning, January 30, 2026, at Travelers Rest United Methodist Church, with visitation following the service. Burial will be private. The family would like to thank the staff of The Woodlands at Furman for the care and love they gave to Frances during her many years there.
