Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Clark

Margaret (Maggie) Elizabeth Clark, 80, died August 31, 2026 at The Woodlands At Furman. She had lived in the South Carolina Upstate for the past 35 years and moved to The Woodlands in June, 2026. Margaret was born in Dublin, Ireland in June 1946 and grew up in the north of England. Her father Cornelius O’Donovan was Irish and a captain and doctor in the British Army in WWII. He was involved in the liberation of the concentration camps in Europe. Her mother, Freda, was English and a nurse who also served during the war. Margaret is survived by brother Nick O’Donovan and his wife Ruth from Devon, England and sister Mary and husband Vern Crabtree of Napier, New Zealand. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Valerie O’Donovan from Waipukurau, New Zealand. She was predeceased by her brother Timothy O’Donovan. Lots of nieces and nephews around the world survive to cherish Margaret’s memory. Margaret emigrated from the UK to Canada in her 20’s and worked in marketing with Gillette Canada in Montreal. In her 30’s she moved to Boston with Gillette. There she joined the International Group as a marketing coordinator and traveled the world. She also met her husband of 40 years, George Schackel. In 1990 they both left Gillette and explored the US in a motorhome for 18 months searching for a new home. After choosing Greenville as their ideal location, Margaret joined Bon Secours St Francis as Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations. During her working life in Greenville, she served on and chaired several local organization boards including The United Way of Greenville County, the Greenville Chamber of Commerce and OLLI at Furman. George finished his working life with Tommy Wyche and his conservation efforts through Naturaland Trust. After living most of their SC life on 15 acres just north of Travelers Rest, they built a house in the West End of Greenville in 2017. Margaret’s interests included watercolor painting. She was also an avid baseball fan and held season tickets to the Greenville Drive from the inaugural game at Fluor Field. She is remembered by family and friends for constantly sending cards of encouragement and well wishes. Margaret was a 29-year member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Travelers Rest, SC. Arrangements are handled by the Howze Mortuary in Travelers Rest, SC. Margaret will be cremated and interned at the Trinity Presbyterian Church columbarium. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Memorials should be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church or the United Way of Greenville County.
