Sharon Lou Gruber Walker

Sharon Lou Gruber Walker, born January 14, 1939, in Mandan, ND, to Jesse Gruber and Thelma Morrison Gruber, passed away peacefully into the arms of her Savior on Monday, January 26 2026. During WWII her family moved to California to work in the shipyards and remained there after the war. Seven years after her birth, she became the sister of Terry A. Gruber. Sharon graduated from El Dorado High School in Placerville, CA, in 1957 and from Kaiser Foundation School of Nursing in Oakland in 1961. In her early teen years she asked Jesus Christ to be her Lord and Savior. During Sharon’s late teens, when doubts arose, she “made sure” and rededicated her life. Soon afterwards, she heard of Bob Jones University and decided the Lord wanted her to go to SC, even though the family was not at all in favor of her moving across the U.S. After taking her state board exams in CA in 1961 and granted her RN license, she proceeded to SC and earned her BS degree from Bob Jones University. A young man she met in church in CA “courted” Sharon via snail mail throughout that first year at BJU. At the end of that first school year, he moved to SC and Sharon became Mrs. Emil Walker. She is the loving mother of six children, Gus, Shelby, Ben, Mat, Josh and Caleb; the grandmother of 24 grandchildren and the great-grandmother of 10 great-granddaughters (plus one great-granddaughter yet unborn...no great-grandsons). Sharon’s great joy was her relationship with her Savior, her family, and encouraging others. Sometimes her purse was so loaded with tangerines or other fruit, that if she didn’t have a rollator to set her purse on, Emil would have to carry it into church so she could cheer those with birthday’s and anniversaries. She loved to write and spent hours ledgering as she had devotions. A number of her articles were published. Sharon was always earnestly concerned that all of her family join her in that great reunion in heaven, where she now rejoices with her Savior. The visitation will be held on Friday, January 30, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at The Howze Mortuary in Travelers Rest. A celebration of her life will follow in the Chapel at 11:00 a.m. A private burial will be held on Monday.
